iPhone 5c Beats Galaxy S5 Despite Being Called A ‘Flop’
Some were considering Apple’s new iPhone 5c to be a major flop, but it’s currently beating out the sales of the new Galaxy S5, which was just released in Europe.
According to CultofMac.com, the research company Kantar Worldpanel compiled the sales figures for both the iPhone 5c and the Galaxy S5 in the month of May and determined that the iPhone is still in the lead.
Tauw.com reported that the Galaxy S5 came in third place behind the iPhone 5s and the iPhone 5c, both of which were launched late last year. Somehow the iPhone 5c, which is practically obsolete in terms of tech devices, outsold the Galaxy S5 right after it was released in Great Britain. It’s even harder to believe when you consider the recent sales of the iPhone 5c have made people consider the device a failure, only showing 6 percent growth from September 2013 through March 2014.
However, the Galaxy S5 did convert some Apple users, according to UberGizmo.com. Seventeen percent of new S5 owners are former iPhone users. The Galaxy’s larger screen is probably the cause of Apple customers switching over to Android. The sales of the Galaxy S5 could be catching up to the iPhone 5c pretty quickly. Kantar Worldpanel ComTech strategic insight director Dominic Sunnebo released the following statement about the iPhone 5c’s success:
“In general, consumers buying the Galaxy S5 were primarily attracted by its large screen size. This is something Apple is likely to address with the larger screen iPhone 6 launch expected in late September.”
Apple could be taking back the lead in the coming months, especially if it’s only large screens that the consumers want. The follow-up to the iPhone 5c, the iPhone 6, is already scheduled to be released in September. There will be 4.7 inch and 5.5 inch variations of the new iPhone 6, blurring the line between smart phone and tablet. Some call this hybrid the “phablet,” which is uncharted territory for the Apple corporation.
At the moment, despite the iPhone 5c’s late success, Android phones still dominate the market. Android phones consist of 73.3 percent of the market share, with Apple iOS phones at 16.6 percent and Windows Phone at 8.1 percent.
