WWE News: WWE Superstar CM Punk’s Contract To Expire This Month

CM Punk has always been a controversial figure in the professional wrestling scene. When he walked away from WWE in January, the wrestling world exploded and Punk became the most popular wrestler in the world. It’s ironic that he makes more noise as a “retired” pro wrestler than most do on the active roster.

Since Punk re-signed with the WWE back in July of 2011, his three-year deal is set to expire this month.

CM Punk’s WWE contract officially expires this month. It will be interesting to see what moves WWE might make, as there might be an option to renew Punk’s deal automatically if WWE decides to.

Like the report suggested, WWE could automatically renew Punk’s deal because of a clause in all the superstar’s contracts. In short, the clause states that if a wrestler doesn’t fulfill the dates required of the contract, then WWE can renew the deal, because they feel that the certain superstar owes them days of work.

The same scenario occurred with Rey Mysterio, who got an extension without asking for one. Vince McMahon renewed him due to all of Mysterio’s injuries and being unable to perform constantly over a long period of time. Regardless of Mysterio’s eagerness to get back in a WWE ring, he will be under contract with them for the next year.

Punk didn’t miss ring time due to specific injuries, but the nagging injuries that he wrestled with for a long time finally caught up to the Chicago-native.

Many things led to Punk’s departure in WWE. Paul Heyman said on Chris Jericho’s podcast, “Talk Is Jericho” that the built-up frustration and injuries expedited the decision to leave the industry all together. Heyman said, “Every day with him was an exercise in him finding the balance to simply continue on and find the passion he needed to do it.”

WWE has a few options with Punk that the fans will either love or hate.

  1. Renewing Punk’s contract is option no. 1. He hasn’t fulfilled any commitments since late-January. In contractual terms, Punk did not abide to his contract’s terms. So, McMahon and HHH have that ability to renew it automatically.
  2. Cutting Phil Brooks is option no.2. It sounds very obvious, but there is nothing else to do at this point. WWE has tried to get him to come back numerous times. Since Punk isn’t budging, it could be time to just let him walk and be free of the contract. It’s not the answer fans want, but it is an option that remains very realistic.

Since AJ Lee returned to WWE and won her second-Divas championship, Punk will be all alone in his Chicago apartment. The thought of him returning due to loneliness is maddening, but as a person, ponder the thought of recently getting married, then being left alone for months at a time.

Lee and Punk were always seen together at Chicago Blackhawks and Cubs games. They truly are best friends and the marriage is still fresh. All Punk has right now are the Cubs and UFC pay-per-views.

Sooner or later, the possibility of boredom opens and the WWE Universe will finally get what they want.

This situation has the potential to get very ugly. If WWE decides to renew his contract without Punks’ permission, he could sue and fight for the contract to be terminated. We will keep you up to date on the Punk-contract situation. After it is all said and done, the WWE Universe could be re-introduced to the Best in the World. On the other hand, the courtroom may end up introducing a new court case; “Phil Brooks v. the WWE.”
