Mariah Carey: Under The Magnifying Glass

Mariah Carey, singer-songwriter of five-octave fame, is slowly becoming the butt of everyone’s jokes.

Carey, 45, and her husband, comedian-rapper Nick Cannon, 33, may be going through a rocky time in their relationship. Talk of their imminent divorce has been circulating for a while, but until recently, we’ve not had any confirmation of dissatisfaction in the couple’s relationship. According to a May interview with Parade, Cannon denied rumors of unhappiness with Carey, saying:

“You kind of have to ignore it because every week it’s something different, and if you paid attention to it, it actually probably would start really affecting you…There’s no merit or truth to it. It’s kind of humorous, really. It couldn’t be further off from the truth, and it really affects the credibility of the so-called newspapers.”

According to Celebrity Laundry, in an interview with Today host Matt Lauer, Mariah said of divorce allegations:

“Look, I’ve always been a pretty vulnerable person. But I built up – I have learned how to build up a wall. So when I have to, I can put up that wall, and leave it there, and walk in the other direction. And that’s what I have to do sometimes with people in my life when they just don’t get it, that I’m a person like them.”

However, neither Carey nor Cannon have yet given a green or red light to the rumors.

This wouldn’t be the first time Mariah has undergone divorce. Carey was married to the former Sony music head, Tommy Mottola, from 1993 until 1998. Mariah left the marriage, in which she felt artistically trapped and unable to explore different genres of music. In 2013, Mottola’s memoir Hitmaker: The Man and His Music was released, in which he apologized to Mariah for the first time for his obsessive tendencies during their marriage.

Carey is also on the radar lately for a scandal involving the art for her new autobiographical album, Me. I Am Mariah… the Elusive Chanteuse, which reportedly marked a record low in non-holiday sales for Carey, according to the Mail Online. Supposedly, the cover for Mariah’s new single, “You Don’t Know What to Do,” is the same picture from her new album, with a different picture of Carey’s face photoshopped on to give the appearance of a different photo. Carey tweeted, “That definitely was not my selection for the cover… ugh!” Enlisting her fans’ support and artistic abilities, Mariah also joked, “Yes, I would love for you send me your art for #YDKWTD (’cause at this point IDKWTD! lol…)”

Pop star Katy Perry apparently doesn’t appreciate Carey’s jokes. According to Gigwise, Perry appreciates Mariah — but as a throwback artist! Classicalite reports that Perry plans to have a drag queen impersonate Carey in her next music video. An insider says Perry has “never been a big fan of Mariah — she thinks that she is high maintenance and hates her diva attitude and how seriously she takes herself.”

Even Wendy Williams is teasing Mariah Carey these days. On her show, Williams agreed with Nick Cannon’s supposed remarks about Carey’s age, saying:

“Mariah is 44, struggling at youth; struggling to stay relevant… I think it’s corny to lie about your age these days… It’s not about trying to be 25, it’s about looking the best that you can, Mariah… Music is being purchased by younger people… [Mariah] and some of the older girls really need to stop making music and just take their act to Vegas.”

While some would say Williams is being too harsh, others may agree. Let us know your thoughts on Mariah Carey and her current presence under the media’s magnifying glass.
