James Gandolfini’s Last Film ‘The Drop’: New Trailer Released After Anniversary Of Death

Only a few days after the one-year anniversary of actor James Gandolfini’s death, the new international trailer has been released for his second posthumous film. The Drop is a crime thriller originally titled Animal Rescue, which stars Gandolfini opposite Tom Hardy.

It’s easy to dream up that this film would be getting the same attention if James Gandolfini were alive, but we’ll never know that for sure. What we do know is that The Drop is a significant film. It’s not just Gandolfini’s second posthumous work (Enough Said was released just after his passing), but this film will be the actor’s last new work that fans can revel in.

As we previously reported the actor died of a heart attack on June 19 while vacationing in Italy with his son. One year later and a second trailer has been released for his last film The Drop. As previously stated, Gandolfini makes a big impression in the previous trailer, and the same can be said for the brand new international trailer.

Tom Hardy is featured with a muddled Brooklyn accent until James Gandolfini’s character sets the gritty tone. Playing Hardy’s cousin Marv, Gandolfini’s presence is felt in a huge way, powering through otherwise cliche lines like:

“I had something once. I was respected. Do you know whose money you’re tracking here? I was feared.”

The Drop is a crime thriller based on a screenplay from author Dennis LeHane. This is just one of a long line of adaptations for LeHane whose works made its way to the big screen, such as, Shutter Island, Gone Baby Gone, War, and Mystic River.

The film stars Tom Hardy as an ex-con turned Brooklyn bartender who runs his own pub. The money laundering business is run out of the pub by his cousin Marv (Gandolfini), who is also his boss. For Gandolfini this isn’t a huge departure from his character on The Sopranos and other works he’s known for, so this will be a nice stamp on a fantastic career.

At the time of his passing the film’s distributor Fox Searchlight paid tribute by showing footage of the film. His co-star Tom Hardy spoke at The Sun Military Awards about working with Gandolfini:

“He was lovely. He was a very special man. He was an incredibly kind and generous human being. He’s very warming and I warmed a lot to him. I really, really loved James.”

The Drop is set to hit theaters on September 12.
