Ben & Jerry’s have introduced two new flavors to gear up for the 40th season of NBC’s sketch comedy Saturday Night Live . The show, which is executive-produced by Lorne Michaels is one of the longest running shows on television. It currently holds the record for being the longest running variety show in U.S. history.
To celebrate SNL’s powerful run, Ben & Jerry’s ice cream has dreamed up of two Saturday Night Live -inspired flavors. The two flavors are Gilly’s Catastrophic Crunch and Lazy Sunday. Gilly’s Catastrophic Crunch is based off of Kristen Wiig’s very popular and extremely annoying character Gilly.
According to Fox , Gilly’s Catastrophic Crunch has a marshmallow swirl, “as frantic and mischievous as the flavor’s namesake,” and “combines chocolate and sweet cream ice creams, with caramel clusters and fudge covered almonds.”
As for the Lazy Sunday flavor, Ben & Jerry’s offers up the always popular vanilla cake batter ice cream and mixes it with yellow and chocolate cupcake pieces and a swirl of chocolate frosting. This flavor isn’t as in your face as Gilly’s Catastrophic Crunch, but it’s still based on a Saturday Night Live sketch. This flavor takes after Andy Samberg and Chris Parnell’s sketch as they play two characters that prattle on about how much they love Magnolia cupcakes.
Ben & Jerry’s has always been on top of pop culture. This isn’t the first time that the ice cream company has taken a stab at creating ice creams inspired by sketch comedy. Remember the ice cream flavor based on Alec Baldwin’s “Schweddy Balls” sketch?
In addition to Baldwin, Ben & Jerry’s once had a love affair for past Saturday Night Live cast member Tina Fey. At the time, which was post- SNL , Fey starred in her own sitcom 30 Rock . To celebrate her zany character Liz Lemon , the company released a flavor called Greek Frozen Yogurt, which referred to Fey’s Greek heritage and the Lemon in her character’s name.
Tina Fey’s flavor was described as “Liz Lemon Greek Frozen Yogurt with a Blueberry Lavender Swirl.” Additionally former SNL cast mate Will Ferrell was also honored with the Scotchy Scotch Scotch flavor, which was inspired by his popular character Ron Burgundy in Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy .
Other comedians honored by Ben & Jerry’s include Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Fallon.
As for the Saturday Night Live ice cream Ben & Jerry’s plans to release more SNL flavors later in the year. Gilly’s Catastrophic Crunch and Lazy Sunday are currently available at scoop shows in the U.S. and Canada.
