Chelsea Handler Signs Netflix Deal For New ‘Late Night’ Show
Looks like Chelsea Handler is about to make Late Night history. Handler who recently ended her time with the E! network has just signed Netflix’s very first Late Night deal.
The former Chelsea Lately host and producer had spent six years on the E! network, before she decided to ink a deal with the streaming service. Since her departure was announced Handler hinted that she was open to outside the box ideas for her career, and it looks like she found the most unique platform for her show with Netflix.
The comedian turned best-selling author made an official statement on her new venture with Netflix.
“If I was going to continue working in this industry, I knew I had to do something outside the box to keep myself interested. I wanted to sit with the cool kids at lunch so I approached Netflix to make sure they were as cool as I thought they were, and when I confirmed my suspicions, like with any other future lover, I made my move.”
Netflix certainly is the cool new kid on the block. As a streaming service, the platform was quick to make the most out of their hook with customers which was the idea that one could binge watch seasons of television series’. After seeing how their platform saved shows from cancellation (the first go-around with The Killing) and brought rejuvenated popularity to others (Breaking Bad) they decided to a swing at producing original content.
In a few short months Netflix had completely changed the experience in how a series is watched by fans. Original content like Orange is the New Black, and House of Cards got people excited about serialized television again in a big way.
Chelsea Handler is probably hoping that Netflix will do the same for Late Night television. Next year she will create “four docu-comedy specials” for Netflix on a plethora of topics including politics, sports, and technology. This will usher in her new talk show, which will premiere sometime in early 2016.
As we previously reported, Handler let her thoughts be known about E!’s lack of creative direction during an interview with Howard Stern. Now Chelsea is singing a different tune when it comes to her exciting new deal at Netflix.
“I’m more excited than I’ve been in awhile, and the team at Netflix is the most forward thinking, alert group I’ve sat down with in ages. No offense to the ‘Shahs Of Sunset.'”
