Game of Thrones star Lena Headey recently opened up about what’s in store for her character next season.
Before we get the proverbial ball rolling, let’s address the spoilers dwelling within this article. Since these little slivers of information are just waiting to ruin your GoT experience, it’s probably a good idea to avoid this idea if you haven’t properly consumed the season finale. Otherwise you may start beating your face against the nearest hard surface when some of the surprises are effectively ruined. Last warning!
Those who follow HBO’s hit fantasy series know that things are looking particularly bleak for Cersei Lannister. Not only did she lose her son Joffrey, her father also shuffled off his mortal coil during this season’s gripping finale. Lena Headey said all of this will definitely take its toll on the woman when the new episodes roll around.
The actress told The Daily Beast :
“Also she’s lost Joffrey and that was a prophecy when she was small and her ability to live in fantasy is getting smaller. She’s also fearful because Margaery is getting very close to Tommen and she really doesn’t like her very much. I don’t know how they’re going to write her reaction to Tywin’s death, but I’m sure there’s going to be some sort of celebration for her in it. But Tywin’s also given her the knowledge that the Lannisters are pretty much broke, so I think she’s overwhelmed with it all.”
The website points out that Cersei starts coming apart in George R.R. Martin’s novels, which includes weight gain and a newfound appreciation for alcohol. While Lena Headey didn’t discuss how the writers will tackle her character’s transformation in season five, the actress definitely seemed interested in taking things in that direction.
Headey added:
“I think the more broken the better. Cersei’s built where you meet her as this woman who seems to have it all under control—her head’s very nice and she’s well-dressed—and underneath it’s a whirling mess. So we really get to see what’s underneath that façade as the seasons go on, and I think next season is going to be particularly brutal for her.”
It’s obvious that Lena Headey loves portraying Cersei on Game of Thrones . If you need proof of Lena’s appreciation for the character, check out this clip from her recent appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live . As the New York Observer points out, Headey’s ability to slip in and out of character is nothing short of impressive.
One thing’s for certain: Lena Headey will gladly tackle anything the Game of Thrones writers toss in her direction next season.
