Benghazi Suspect In Libya Embassy Terror Attack Arrested
Benghazi terror attack suspect arrested. One individual is being held in Libya and will ultimately be transported back to the United States. Abu Khattalia is just one of several US embassy terror attack suspects being investigated, according to breaking news reports on Fox News.
Abu Khattalia was photographed in the days following the burning of the US mission in Benghazi sitting at a sidewalk cafe sipping on a drink. Khattalia reportedly boasted about his role in the terror attack which took the lives of four American to a New York Times reporter. It is not currently known where the Benghazi suspect will be held after departing from a Navy ship on United States soil.
The arrest of the Benghazi terror attack suspect was the work of a joint effort between multiple agencies on Sunday evening. There were no shots fired during the arrest, according to the Pentagon.
Excerpt from a Washington Post report about the Benghazi arrest:
“Last year, the U.S. Attorney in the District filed charges against Khattala and at least a dozen others in connection with the Benghazi attacks. None besides Khattala — who is expected to be arraigned in Washington — has been apprehended. Several terrorist suspects abducted overseas have been held aboard U.S. naval ships at sea while being interrogated, after which they were turned over to FBI “clean teams” to question them for trial without endangering the admissibility of evidence.”
In January, the State Department designated Khattala a terrorist and referred to him as a “senior leader” in Ansar al-Sharia, a militant group that developed after the fall of the Moammar Gaddafi regime. Ansar al-Sharia was designated as a terrorist group and deemed responsible for the September 11 attack on the US embassy in Libya. Christopher Stevens, State Department security official Sean Smith, and CIA contractors Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty were killed in the attack.
When asked if the Libyan government had approved of the arrest of Abu Khattalia, an unnamed U.S. official said:
“I am not going to get into the specifics of our diplomatic discussions, but to be clear: This was a unilateral U.S. operation. We have made clear to successive Libyan governments our intention to bring to justice the perpetrators of the attack on our facilities in Benghazi. So it should come as no surprise to the Libyan government that we would take advantage of an opportunity to bring Abu Khatalla to face justice.”
