Spiderman Statue In South Korea Removed For Sporting Visible Boner
A Spiderman statue erected on the side of a building in a South Korean shopping center is being taken down because of a giant, visible erection coming from the superhero’s blue and red suit.
The statue was created by artist Eunsuk Yoo, showing Spiderman dangling from the building while twisting backward. The statue’s positioning, and the fact that the bulge in his pants matched the color of the rest of his pants, made it hard for shoppers to notice the graphic addition.
But after enough people noticed, officials at the shopping center decided that the statue had to come down.
The blog Comics Alliance noted:
The statue was commissioned for the Lotte Shopping Center in Busan, South Korea, specifically near the mall’s playground which… I mean, we can all agree that was probably a bad choice, right? The statue’s extremely prominent phallus has mostly gone unnoticed for the past year, likely because the statue is positioned high on the wall, though from the side Spider-Man’s excitement at the prospect of fighting crime is certainly visible. It seems action truly is his reward.
Strangely enough, Yoo was given the option to change the statue so the Spiderman boner was no longer visible, but he opted to stand by his artistic statement and instead take it down entirely rather than change it. Yoo also wrote about the incident in a Facebook post, vowing to “reach out to the public with a better work next time.”
It’s actually been a very good year for Spiderman otherwise.
This year the sequel to the 2012 reboot was released, and is approaching $200 million gross in the United States. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has also grossed $700 million worldwide.
The success already has Sony Pictures moving forward on a pair of sequels. Screenrant reports that The Amazing Spider-Man 3 is due for release on July 10, 2016, and the fourth installment of the series will hit the big screen on May 4, 2018.
There’s no word on what Yoo will do now with the Spiderman statue sporting the visible erection now that it’s been taken down.
