The New York Rangers and Los Angeles Kings seem determined to make the 2014 Stanley Cup Playoffs the longest in history. In addition to the L.A. Kings becoming the first team to advance to the Stanley Cup finals after playing three game 7s on the road (not to mention needing to go 7 games in every round of the playoffs so far), the Rangers have gone seven games in two of the three preliminary rounds and six games against the Montreal Canadiens in the Eastern Conference semifinals. In other words, the two teams played a combined 41 games to get to the finals – just one less than the maximum possible.
On top of that, they have gone into overtime in both games of the Rangers-Kings series so far, including double overtime in game 2. The two teams played a combined seven overtime games in the preliminary rounds – the Kings played four and the Rangers played three.
Los Angeles takes a two game lead into game 3 at Madison Square Garden, where the Rangers will attempt to regroup and salvage their chance to win their first Stanley Cup since the Wayne Gretzky era in 1994.
The New York Rangers aren’t exactly strangers to having their backs against the wall during the 2014 Stanley Cup playoffs. In the second round, they fell behind presumptive MVP Sidney Crosby and the heavily favored Pittsburgh Penguins three games to one before sweeping the final three games with highly charged play inspired by forward Martin St. Louis, who continued to play despite losing his mother unexpectedly.
The Rangers appear to be keeping their confidence up despite losing leads in both of the first two games of the Kings-Rangers series.
Forward Mats Zuccarello put it this way, according to a Yahoo Sports report:
“We played two good games. We didn’t get the bounces in OT. We’ve got to limit our mistakes. I think we’re a confident group. I think we played the best hockey. We’ll have our fans, the best fans in the world, but it’s two good teams. I don’t know how much it’s going to mean. Hopefully the fans are going to be behind us, and we’ll get a good boost.”
