Jennifer Lawrence And David O. Russell Teaming Up Again
Jennifer Lawrence’s working relationship with director David O. Russell has already produced two critically acclaimed and award-winning movies. It started with Silver Linings Playbook and continued with American Hustle, and now Lawrence and Russell are looking to continue that success with another movie, titled Joy.
Lawrence, who has another hit on her hand with the ensemble blockbuster X-Men: Days of Futures Past, will play the title role of Joy Mangano who is famous for inventing the Miracle Mop. The movie will center around Mangano’s journey as she worked three jobs in order to see her invention become a reality.
Lawrence, 23, actually talked about being contacted by Russell about the project on Live With Kelly and Michael back in March, according to Indiewire.
“[David O. Russell] recently texted me at I think 4 in the morning, and he was like, ‘I think I want to make a movie about the woman who invented the [Miracle] Mop. You want to do it?'” Lawrence told the two hosts. “I was like, ‘Yeah,'” and added that, “I can just imagine David looking at somebody mopping and being like, ‘Yeah, that’s my next screenplay.'”
The screenplay was written by Bridesmaids writer Annie Mumolo, but with Russell directing Refinery29 states there’s a good chance he’ll make a few of his own changes given his history of rewriting scripts.
Twentieth Century Fox just gave this movie a release date of Christmas Day 2015, which also means that Lawrence won’t be taking much time off like she said at the beginning of the year. Lawrence is currently finishing up The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2, and if Joy is going to be ready for its release date, then filming will have to start no later than this coming fall.
Indiewire says that it’s also going to have some very healthy competition in theaters when it arrives. Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt will burst into theaters the exact same day in Mission: Impossible 5 which should make for an exciting box office battle between the box office legend and Lawrence. Also, Kung Fu Panda 3 arrives two days before, and week before any of that Star Wars fans will be flocking to theaters for the long-awaited Star Wars: Episode VII.
Also on Jennifer Lawrence’s plate within the next few years is Serena, a movie she did with constant co-star Bradley Cooper, and an adaptation of the book East of Eden which will span two movies. Jennifer will also be reprising her role as Mystique in X-Men: Apocalypse.
As of right now, no other casting details for Joy besides Lawrence’s role have been announced.
