Racing fans can watch the 2014 Belmont Stakes live online and see whether California Chrome has what it takes to make history.
After wins in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, California Chrome is looking to become the first horse in 36 years to take home the Triple Crown. He will again go to the post at 6:50 pm on Saturday as the favorite, though he won’t exactly have history on his side.
Since Affirmed won the Triple Crown in 1978, there have been 12 horses to win both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes. All of them failed to win the Belmont.
One of the horses to fall just short — War Emblem in 2002 — has a connection to California Chrome. Victor Espinoza rode War Emblem when 70-1 Savara pulled off one of the biggest upsets in horse racing, and Espinoza will be atop California Chrome on Saturday.
Those who watch the 2014 Belmont Stakes live online won’t stand to win much if they bet on California Chrome. He was listed early Saturday at 3-5 odds, meaning the payoff would be small (a full betting guide including links to bet online can be found here).
California Chrome’s owner and trainers are quite confident he can pull off the win. Co-owner Steve Coburn actually guaranteed a victory, and while trainer Al Sherman wasn’t quite as brash in his statements, he did say he liked their chances on Saturday.
“He’s a good horse, just needs to have a good trip and I really think you’ll see the next Triple Crown winner,” Sherman said. “He just might be that extra special horse that you need.”
Fans who watch the 2014 Belmont Stakes live online may see one of the most anticipated races ever. Attendance is expected to be high in Elmont, New York, and experts think it might even break the record of 120,139 set in 2004. It helps that the forecast calls for sunshine and temperatures in the mid-70s when the race kicks off at 6:52 pm.
