Bill Gates Funds New Condom Research [Video]
Bill Gates recently made headlines due to his new investment: condom research. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has awarded $100,000 to the University of Wollongong in Australia to help develop a condom with better sensation. The YouTube video up top explains in more detail.
Researchers at the University of Wollongong are trying to formulate an alternative latex called tough hydrogel. In the video above, Dr. Robert Gorkin, a biomedical engineer, explains that the material is “made to act and feel more like real skin.” Dr. Gorkin and his research team hope that their new condom will influence more guys into using protection, as well as prevent unwanted pregnancies and the spread of STD’S.
Why hydrogels? Hydrogels can be tailored to feel like natural skin tissue, and can be engineered with functions such as self lubrication, topical drug delivery, and biodegradability. Hydrogels are already being used in contact lenses to food products.
Dr.Gorkin makes a statement of how influential the Bill & Melinda Gates foundation is:
“The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation funding has enabled us to explore new applications of our materials research that could make a genuine impact on the health and well being of people worldwide.”
Bill Gates has invested in other forms of protection projects such as: human scented “trojan cows,” which can divert biting insects, such as malaria-infected mosquitoes, away from people. Bill Gates is definitely investing his money in a variety of ways.
