Dunkin’ Donuts Celebrates National Donut Day June 6th!

Dunkin’ Donuts knows what you want and they’re prepared to give it to you: free donuts! Tomorrow, June 6th, is National Donut Day and to celebrate, Dunkin’ is giving away one free donut to anyone who purchases a beverage. As if we didn’t need yet another excuse to stop for a cup of that one of a kind delicious coffee, right? Customers can pick out any donut of their choice and just in time they’ve also debuted a brand new donut this week: the Blueberry Cobbler donut, made with blueberry filling, white dipping icing and a coffee streusel topping.

Believe it or not, National Donut Day dates back to World War one when Salvation Army volunteers served coffee and donuts to soldiers on the front lines. The day was designated to honor those female volunteers who provided the rations which were distributed in an attempt to lift the soldiers’ spirits. It always falls on the first Friday in June. Dunkin’ Donuts is not the only shop to participate in giving free donuts on this day, Kriwpy Kreme will also participate as will Entenmann’s Bakery and many smaller privately owned bakeries participate as well. In Chicago, National Donut Day is still a fundraiser for the Salvation Army.

Dunkin’ Donuts has more than one reason to celebrate this month, though. Earlier this week, The Wall Street Journal reported that the company announced an important mile stone of one million enrollments for their DD Perks Reward Program. The program was launched nationwide earlier this year, offering guests points toward free Dunkin’ Donuts beverages for every qualifying purchase they make at participating Dunkin’ Donuts locations. To thank their customers, the company placed 100 bonus points into the accounts of every existing DD Perks member. Dunkin’ Donuts will reward that lucky the one millionth DD Perks member with free coffee for a year and a commemorative, personalized Dunkin’ Donuts gift card.
