‘Star Wars’ Spinoff Movies Get ‘Fantastic Four’ Director

One of the Star Wars spinoff movies will be directed by the man behind the Fantastic Four. Before anyone runs off and writes angry letters to Disney, let’s clarify that the Fantastic Four film in question is the reboot, not the one with Chris Evans, Jessica Alba, and Michael Chiklis.

Given the public’s reaction to the Fantastic Four reboot casting, this might not be any better. When it was revealed that Johnny Storm and his father would be African-American, leaving Susan Storm Caucasian, comic book purists screamed with rage. We know nothing yet beyond the casting for the Fantastic Four reboot, so the comic book purists may need to just accept change.

Nick Fury, Kingpin, and Electro have all deviated from their racial origins as well, mind you, but let’s get back to the Star Wars spinoff movies.

The director planned for either the Han Solo or Boba Fett movie, Josh Trank, also directed the found-footage superhero film Chronicle. Is anyone relieved yet?

Considering the types of characters Han Solo and Boba Fett are, the found footage style would fit better with the gritty world that the Star Wars “scoundrel” allegedly grew up in. We don’t know if that will be how it’s going to be filmed, but it does make more sense than Boba Fett.

Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy praised Josh Trank on the film series’ web site:

“He is such an incredible talent and has a great imagination and sense of innovation. That makes him perfectly suited to Star Wars, and for this new slate of movies that reach beyond the core characters and storylines of Episodes I through IX.”

Star Wars spinoff movie director Josh Trank even said that the opportunity was like a dream come true:

“The magic of the Star Wars [universe] defined my entire childhood. The opportunity to expand on that experience for future generations is the most incredible dream of all time.”

In this way, Josh Trank is just as qualified for the job as Joss Whedon was for the Avengers franchise, having grown up with the characters. Keep it in mind that Joss Whedon was also behind Alien: Resurrection, one of the worst films in that franchise, so the fact that he made such a phenomenal film the first time was a pleasant surprise.

The other director for one of the Star Wars spinoff movies was announced as Godzilla director Gareth Edwards. It is unknown which film each director will be taking the reigns for, but it will certainly be exciting to find out.
