It’s been 20 years since the last time the New York Rangers earned a spot in the Stanley Cup Finals. Wayne Gretzky was leading the charge at the time. It’s been even longer – 21 years – since the Montreal Canadiens have seen the finals.
The Rangers had the chance to ice their trip to the finals on the exact 20th anniversary of their last trip to the finals. They couldn’t get the job done, as a very determined Canadiens team, with its back against the wall, laid out a 7-4 lesson in how to get things done. The question on every Habs fan’s mind is, “Can they do it again?”
“And again?”
Tonight, you get to witness Rangers vs Canadiens game six – the Rangers second of three opportunities to send the Canadiens packing after skating to a 3-1 series lead int eh first four games. Game 5 started out close, but it didn’t take long for the Canadiens to widen the gap and start laying down the lumber. Here’s the NHL’s recap of that game:

The Rangers have made a habit of making things interesting this year, going the full seven games in both previous rounds of the 2014 NHL Playoffs.
A Yahoo! Sports report quotes New York Rangers center iceman Brad Richards saying this going into tonight’s Canadiens vs. Rangers game 6:
“It’s an opportunity to win the game to go to the Stanley Cup final. I think everybody is alert and ready that way. We were talking about it all (Tuesday) how excited we were to get on the ice and start playing. We had some mental breakdowns, but I don’t think it had anything to do with (fatigue). We’ve had a lot of rest this series. The opportunity that faces us right now, we’re pretty excited about it. I don’t think there is too much letdown.
“You learn a lot from it. That’s why experience is experience. You go through many situations. (Tuesday) night was a bad feeling, but today we’re getting on a plane to go back to our city, and we get to play in front of our fans. It’s always, ‘forget as quick as possible and try to remember the good things that we’re doing.’ It was one bad night, but we’ve been doing a lot of good things in this series. It’s a desperate time. You don’t want to go back to a Game 7, where anything can happen. We want to get this done. They’re a good team anywhere. We’re going to have to be a lot better, and we will be.”
Look for P.K. Subban and Montreal to come out just as strong in game 6 of the Canadiens vs. Rangers series. That’s the way it always is when two teams with proud traditions face each other in a do-or-die game, and the Canadiens are at the do-or-die point.
