Rapper Iggy Azalea Ties The Beatles’ Record

The aggressive rapping style of Iggy Azalea has taken the Billboard charts by storm in the same way Nicki Minaj and Lil’ Kim topped the charts in the past. One huge difference is the Australian rapper has tied a record with the legendary rock band The Beatles.

That’s right — The Beatles and Iggy Azalea have something in common: Iggy and The Beatles are the only two acts in history to ever have their first official singles occupy two top chart spots simultaneously.

Iggy Azalea’s hit song “Fancy” is currently at the top spot of the Billboard’s Hot 100 chart, and “Problem,” a song by Ariana Grande, which features Azalea, is right behind. Having two singles charting simultaneously ties her with a record only The Beatles hold.

Back in the day, The Beatles had two chart topping songs in the first and second spots of the Billboard Hot 100. Their single “I Want to Hold Your Hand” rose to the top of the charts after their 1964 appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show; “She Loves You” jumped from the third spot to the second at the same time.

In addition to Iggy Azalea’s singles, her very first single, “Work,” which is now a year old, has finally made it on the charts at No. 63.

Iggy’s quick success in the industry has put her in a very special position very early on in her career as a rap diva. She joins the ranks of Mariah Carey and Ashanti as the third female artist to grab the top two slots at the same time.

Back in April, Azalea spoke about her high concept music video for “Fancy” and why she isn’t the most conventional female artist alive. Taking a page out of the film Clueless, Iggy’s “Fancy” is inspired by the threads the cast wore in the film.

“‘Fancy’ is such a West Coast sounding song and beat that I felt like this would be the perfect opportunity for me to use this film. It’s a movie about Valley Girls and that’s something very West Coast but not very rap. I thought it would be a cool tongue-in-cheek way to be very L.A. but unexpected.”

As far as straddling the line of aesthetically pleasing looks, Azalea told Radio.com .

“It’s hard. I know so many talented unattractive people. And I know plenty of talented people who are complete s— and make five times as much money as them. Life is harsh. [Laughs] For me, I’m a bit of a girly girl so I like to dress up and do those things. It’s easier for me to balance it. I don’t have to think so much about that. It’s like an accessory.”

Iggy Azalea’s new album is currently out in stores.
