A two-headed snake has gone on display at a Southern Ukrainian zoo, instantly becoming one of the most popular attractions.
Zoo officials say the small albino California Kingsnake has two heads that think, react and eat separately, though one is more passive than the other.
“Sometimes one head wants to crawl in one direction and the other head in another direction,” zoo director Oleg Zubkov told French news agency, AFP.
Feeding time for the rare reptile also occasionally poses a problem, as another zoo worker, Ruslan Yakovenko explained.
“If it is really hungry, its heads may steal food from each other,” he said, adding that a barrier must temporarily be put between the snake’s heads to rectify these situations.
The private zoo – called “Skazka,” which fittingly translates to “fairy tale” – housing the mutant-looking creature, said kingsnakes instinctively hunt other reptiles, meaning one of the snake’s heads could impulsively try to attack and eat the other one.
The three-year-old, two-foot snake, which is on loan from Germany, will be on show in Ukraine until September.
