If you’re sick of the Michael Sam controversy, brace yourself, because the first openly gay NFL player whose draft day and subsequent kiss with his boyfriend sparked headlines all over the world, is now getting his own reality show.
According to a report from Entertainment Weekly , Michael Sam is getting his own documentary series. Off the heels of Lindsay Lohan’s docuseries being tossed away, Oprah Winfrey’s OWN has struck up a deal with the NFL player and has announced that the series will follow Sam as he prepares to enter the pro football league.
Another thing Michael Sam’s docuseries has in common with Lohan’s is not only is it on the same network, but documentarian Amy Rice, who was hired and stalled many times while filming Lindsay, will be in charge of the new series.
Although Michael Sam’s show isn’t titled, OWN is describing the docuseries as :
“A deeply personal, up-close look at the remarkable man at the center of this groundbreaking moment in professional sports, as the former University of Missouri football player enters the competitive world of professional football. Cameras will follow Sam as he works to earn his spot on the St. Louis Rams all while under the intense scrutiny of being the first openly gay player in the NFL.”
In a statement, Oprah Winfrey had this to say about the upcoming journey for Michael Sam and the enormous potential that his story will have to touch others:
“We are honored that Michael is trusting us with his private journey in this moment that has not only made history but will shape it forever. I am proud of the focus on authentic storytelling in our new documentary series format. The next real-life story we follow in The Untitled Michael Sam Project promises to spark valuable, important discussion on life in America today. Acceptance and illumination start here.”
Sam, who will very much be involved in making the docuseries, as well as being the subject, said:
“Like every player out there working to make a team right now, my focus is on playing football to the very best of my ability. I am determined. And if seeing my story helps somebody else accept who they are and to go for their dreams too, that’s great. I am thankful to Oprah for her support and excited to work together.”
Michael Sam was selected in the 7th round of the NFL draft and will play defensive end for the St. Louis Rams.
