Can Atlético Madrid win La Liga against Barcelona? That is the million dollar question, and we will have an answer come next Sunday, May 19, when the top two teams in Spanish football face-off in the last match of the season for a true final.
After Real Madrid’s hopes were crushed by Celta Vigo 0-2 on Sunday, the path is clear for Atlético to take it all, but first they must contend with Barcelona, which will be defending their title next weekend.
For many years, it has been either Real — 32 all-time titles — or Barca — 22 La Liga titles — fighting it out for the trophy. The last time Atlético won the Primera Division was in the 1995-1996 season, so “Los Rojiblancos” — and their fans — are more than ready to claim another title.

Many experts believe that Atlético deserves to win the title, but as we know all too well, that is not enough and the match still must be played and Barcelona is not to be taken lightly, even though they haven’t had the best season on record.
The Catalan team has struggled in the latter part of the season, and even though that their superstar Lionel Messi has had a good season, it hasn’t been as good as in past ones.
Barcelona’s has been somewhat lackluster in the latter part of the season, drawing against Elche on Sunday and losing their bids in the UEFA Champions League to Atlético and the Copa del Rey final to Real last month.
Messi and company are hungry and want to prove that they’re still relevant this season, which will make for an exciting final of a La Liga season that has been one of the closest races in recent memory.
Atlético Madrid is the one team that has the most at stake as they currently find themselves comfortably at the top of La Liga standings and have had an impressive show this season, with many picking Diego Simeone’s team to be in this position at this time.

In the end, it comes down to this: Atlético Madrid leads Barcelona by three points, but Barca can still win La Liga if they beat “Los Rojiblancos” since they have a better goal differential. A win or draw is enough to give the title to Atlético. One thing’s for sure, it will be a final for the ages.
