These days, reboots are all the rage in film. Now it’s believed that Fast & Furious director Justin Lin has his eyes set on a Lethal Weapon reboot. If that news isn’t exciting on its own, then it’s who he has his sights set on that should really be the talk of the industry.
The Tracking Board reports that Lin wants none other than Thor’ s Chris Hemsworth to take the lead role in the upcoming reboot for Lethal Weapon . As some of you may or should know, Australian actor Mel Gibson took the title role of Martin Riggs, and it looks like Aussie native Chris Hemsworth may follow in his footsteps.
It isn’t certain if the role of Martin Riggs will be recast and given to Hemsworth, or if the actor will play Martin Rigg’s son, but either way it’s looking like production is sold on Hemsworth being a part of it in some form.
According to the original report the Lethal Weapon reboot has its original producer Joel Silver on board, and for right now they’re calling the projec t Lionheart . The original screenwriter for Lethal Weapon will also have a hand in the reboot, as it’s said that Shane Black will be consulting with the production of the new film.
As of right now, actor turned director Mel Gibson and Danny Glover are not up for reprising their roles, and had previously denied rumors years ago about a possible Lethal Weapon 5 coming to fruition. However, Glover did tell Total Film back in 2012:
‘I think the way things are going, they’ll just remake those somehow.”
In 2011 Danny Glover was quoted at Sundance sounding off on the news that there was a Lethal Weapon reboot in the works. At the time the actor hadn’t heard of the news, and said of the possible reboot:
“I’d like to think that the four we did were still magical and people will still reference the four ‘Lethal Weapon’ I like what we’ve done before in the past.”
Glover wasn’t convinced that a reboot without director Richard Donner would work, having said:
“Dick Donner is the one who’s behind all this. Dick Donner is the one. He’s really the magic behind this [franchise]. There’s no way this could have been done, the four ‘Lethal Weapon’ movies, without Richard Donner.”
These days Richard Donner is a bit busy. As previously reported the director is currently heading up the production of the Goonies sequel .
More news on the Lethal Weapon reboot to come.
