Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus Release Statements On One Year Anniversary Of Ariel Castro Escape

On the one year anniversary of their dramatic escape from the monstrous hands of serial rapist and sexual deviant, Ariel Castro – who committed suicide in prison – two of the escapees, Michelle Knight and Gina DeJesus, released statements to the press.

Having spent up to a decade in captivity in a secret dungeon at Castro’s home, the women will probably never fully overcome their traumatic ordeals. Nevertheless, a year on and the heartfelt statements released by the two woman show that they have come a long way in coming to terms with what happened to them.

Amanda Berry spoke about the strength she has gotten from her family which has made her feel positive and looking forward to the future.

Here is Amanda Berry’s full statement:

I would like to thank all the people who have helped and supported my family and me. You have changed our lives in ways you’ll never know.

On this day, we decided that the right place for us to be was with other families who have gone through what our family has gone through. I want these families to know they will always have a special place in our hearts.

So much has happened this past year. I have grown. I am strong. And I have so much to live for, to look forward to. The future is bright.

Gina DeJesus also released a statement talking about what she has achieved since escaping her captor a year ago:

I want to thank everyone who donated to the Courage Fund and sent gifts to me. You have made such a difference in my life.

This past year has been amazing, full of healing and hope. I am spending time with my family and working with Amanda on a book that we are really excited about.

I have also been enjoying new experiences, such as learning how to use new technology and how to drive. Thanks for continuing to respect my privacy and that of my family.

Many people around the world wish both Michelle Knight and Gina DeJesus lots of luck and success in their endeavors as so many draw on their strength and courage in the face of extreme adversity and how well they have readjusted to normal life.
