The Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Marcos Maidana result was a lot closer than many boxing experts anticipated, with Mayweather winning in a squeaker that saw both fighter land some strong blows.
The fight turned from what was considered a likely Mayweather blowout into quite a close affair, with Mayweather winning on points: 114-114, 117-111, 116-112.
Many saw the bout as Mayweather’s biggest challenge in years, as Maidana often put him on the defensive.
“While I believe the 117-111 was too wide, this was a well-deserved victory for Mayweather,” said ESPN’s Brian Campbell . “He countered cleanly and weathered Maidana’s storms well. Full credit to Maidana, however, for making Mayweather work more than any opponent in over a decade.
The result elicited boos from the crowd, with was filled with many supporters of the Argentinian Maidana.
There was plenty of other drama surrounding the fight. On Saturday morning, it looked like there might not be a fight at all after Mayweather’s came objected to a pair of gloves Maidana planned to wear. The gloves were a custom made set of blue Everlast MX, but Mayweather’s side said it was too easy to move padding away from the knuckles to make a harder punching surface.
The issue was smoothed out in time for the fight to go on , but that wasn’t the only drama. In an interview before the fight Floyd Mayweather Jr. revealed that he was no longer with his former live-in fiancee, and that she was no longer pregnant with his twins, either.
Mayweather said he wasn’t going to let the distractions get to him.
“My job is to go out there and do what I do best,” Mayweather said after weighing in at 146 pounds, one under the welterweight limit. “I perform better under pressure. I look forward to going out there and being Floyd Mayweather and taking my time, keeping my composure and doing what I do best.
“Pressure. I love it. I love it. The main thing is, as long as God loves me, I’m OK.”
