Novak Djokovic Celebrates Wimbledon Victory by Eating Centre Court Grass
Novak Djokovic celebrated his first Wimbledon title in an extremely unique manner, he munched on a little of the Centre Court grass.
After meeting Rafael Nadal at the net following his 6-4, 6-1, 1-6, 6-3 victory in the thrilling two and a half hour match, the 24-year-old Serbian walked back out onto the court and was overcome with emotion as he sank to his knees and ate a piece of the hallowed All England Club turf to the roars of the 15,000-strong crowd.
Djokovic explained his bizarre celebration after the match:
“I felt like an animal. I wanted to see how it tastes. It tastes good. It just came. I don’t know. It came spontaneously really. I didn’t plan to do it. You know, I didn’t know what to do for my excitement and joy.”
While Novak was chewing on Wimbledon’s greenery, Nadal, the defending champion, was shaking off the pain that came along with his first defeat at the All England Club since losing in the 2007 final.
Nadal, who has been replaced as the #1 ranked tennis player in the world, took the loss like a “champion.”
“He played better than me. For that reason he is the champion here.”
