‘Sherlock’ Season 4 Planned, Martin Freeman Teases One-Off Special
Sherlock Seasons 4 and 5 are already in the planning, but filming has not resumed and fans of the TV series may have to wait for a couple of years to see what happens next with Holmes and Watson, more likely after 2016. Martin Freeman was kind enough to throw a bone to disappointed fans saying a possible one-off in between seasons may happen.
While making an appearance on the talk show Chatty Man — set to air on Friday — The Hobbit star told host Alan Carr that creators were thinking about maybe filming a one-off special that would premiere sometime before the premiere for Sherlock Season 4 airs on BBC One in the UK and PBS Masterpiece! in the US.
“(Creator) Mark Gatiss may beat me up, but there is an idea for this one-off special that’s such a good idea, and as I was listening to it I thought, ‘We’ve just got to do this,’ and I don’t know when we are going to be able to do it, unfortunately.”
That bit of information was enough to throw social media into a frenzy and mostly positive reaction to the possibility of seeing Sherlock before three-years from now.

Even thought there is no firm timetable for when Season 4 will start shooting, somewhat due to the busy schedule of Benedict Cumberbatch — one of the busiest actors in the business — and Martin Freeman for that matter, Gatiss and co-creator Steven Moffat said things are moving along, but didn’t share any other details.
Cumberbatch was nice enough to share a bit more of specifics about Season 4 and beyond, which may land him in trouble with Sherlock bosses, when he spoke to Radio Times:
“We’ve agreed to two more (seasons) but I could get into trouble for saying that. All I know at the moment is we’re doing these three (episodes) and another three. I just don’t know what there is beyond that.”
So for now, fans of Sherlock can rest assured that a Season 4 is coming, at some point and we may yet see a Sherlock Christmas Special a la, Downton Abbey, which have proved to be very successful.
