Scarlett Johansson Talks About Her Nude Scene in “Under The Skin”
Scarlett Johansson bares it all on screen in her new movie Under The Skin for the first time in her film career. The film, which hit select theaters on April 11th, shows Johansson as an alien who lures men to their death by seducing and overtaking them. Scarlett, who admits she’s not usually a “provocative person,” said that she felt the nudity served the story of Under The Skin and wasn’t gratuitous. It was director Jonathan Glazer that convinced her of the nudity’s importance; however, Scarlett is still concerned about it being possibly shared as a screenshot. “You assume its going to be a screenshot for someone. You kind of have to weigh the value of the risk that you’re taking,” she says.
Johansson’s nudity in the film, however, is not meant to be seen as a turn-on or overly sexual. One review calls her nudity actually “quite disturbing.” The first time Scarlett’s nude on screen it’s meant to be surreal and scary. Which seems about right, as the premise of the movie involves Scarlett’s unnamed alien character seducing men until they literally melt into the floor. The movie is adapted from a novel by Michael Faber and contains little dialogue; it’s told more in a series of images that are allegories to desire, horror, and identity. Scarlett’s personal love life thankfully doesn’t involve seducing men to their death. Most of her romance has been kept quiet; Scarlett recently opened up about her short marriage to Ryan Reynolds, which ended back in 2010. “I feel I know now more of what I need in a relationship, what I want in a relationship,” Scarlett says about her divorce with Ryan. Reynolds is now happily married to another Holywood blonde bombshell – Blake Lively – while Scarlett is settling in with a French journalist named Romain Dauriac, with whom she’s expecting her first child. Scarlett also admits that dating someone outside of Hollywood has been “refreshing”:
We do different things. He’s in the whole art-scene world. So it’s nice, because we can enjoy each other’s worlds, but we don’t have our crazy conflicting schedules and all that other stuff to contend with.
Great to see Scarlett happy and in love, and comfortable enough with herself to take on such courageous roles as her daring one in Under The Skin. Scarlett’s also soon to star in the action-packed Lucy and is currently on set filming the much-anticipated Avengers sequel.
