Tony Romo Participates In Offseason Workouts
Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo is participating in offseason workouts being held this week at the club’s Valley Ranch facility according to Dallas/Fort Worth NBC affiliate, KXAS.
The veteran, who is celebrating his 34th birthday today, is coming off of a season-ending discectomy to repair a herniated disk injured in a game at Washington in Week 16. Romo underwent the surgery on December 27, 2013 and was placed on the Cowboys injured reserve list. Backup Kyle Orton finished the 2013 campaign for the Cowboys, falling to the Philadelphia Eagles, 24-22, in the final game of the season.

The workouts are strictly voluntary, and players are allowed by the National Football League to lift weights, run sprints, and conduct football activities provided they are not under the supervision of coaches and/or scouts.
Quarterbacks can throw to receivers as long as they are not covered or defended by defensive backs.
ESPN’s Calvin Watkins first reported that Romo was expected to take part in the offseason program earlier this morning. Watkins also reports that Romo’s rehab program is going well.
Last month, the QB spoke to ESPN concerning his rehab progress, “It’s going good. We’re getting close now to [returning]. Usually takes three months, it’s just normal kinda roundabout date that they give ya and we’re right on schedule. Really ahead in a lot of ways. Just going to be ready to go here in about a month and rehab is going good, no setbacks of any kind. Mine [surgery] was just a normal small version of it, so I should be good to go here shortly.”
This week’s offseason workout program is the first of several such camps the Cowboys have scheduled for the offseason. A rookie minicamp is slated for the weekend following the May 8-10 NFL draft.
Organized Team Activities, commonly referred to as OTAs, are scheduled for the Cowboys starting May 28. The OTAs are slated to end June 12.
Dallas will wrap up their offseason program with a mandatory veteran minicamp June 17-19.
Other teammates rehabbing from injury joined Romo in this week’s voluntary workouts, including running back Lance Dunbar (knee), cornerback Morris Claiborne (shoulder and finger), wide receiver Dwayne Harris (shoulder) and defensive lineman Tyrone Crawford, who tore his Achilles tendon in the first day of training camp last year.
Cowboy fans are hopeful that Romo participating in offseason workouts is a sign that the signal-caller will be 100 percent for the start of the 2014 NFL season.
The three-time Pro Bowler finished the 2013 season with 3,828 yards passing, 31 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions.
