Burger King Big King Gets A Chicken Makeover
Burger King is frying up more than burgers these days! Come April 19th, Burger King Worldwide Inc. will reportedly be introducing the Chicken Big King sandwich across the US according to Alex Macedo, president of the Miami-based company’s North American unit.
According to a report by Crain’s Chicago Business, Burger King’s Chicken Big King sandwich is a double-decker fried-chicken patty sandwich with lettuce and pickles. This new sandwich is an altered version of the original Big King sandwich, which simply had a beef patty instead of chicken. The Huffington Post stated that the original Big King sandwich was unveiled at Burger King’s around the US last November.
Macedo stated that the new Burger King sandwich has been tested earlier this year and it did “extremely well.” According to the Huffington Post, some believe that this new sandwich is eerily similar to items offered at other fast food chains such as McDonald’s Big Mac or a clone of KFC/Canada’s double-decker Big Boss sandwich.
“There’s no point in not offering your guests something they like and appreciate,” Macedo said. “With the Big King we took a familiar platform and we serve it with the fire-grilled taste everyone loves about Burger King. Sales have been strong, which tells us it was a good thing to offer to our guests. And with the Chicken Big King, we’re taking that platform and innovating on it. [The double-decker sandwich] is a widely known platform that has been relatively dormant over the past few years,” Macedo said. “We brought in the Big King and that created a lot of excitement. Now we’re bringing a second round with the Chicken Big King.”
This isn’t the first chicken item that Burger King has reportedly rolled out recently. The popular burger food chain has recently rolled out a spicy-chicken sandwich and their one-dollar rodeo-chicken sandwich.
According to Crain’s Chicago Business, the current increase in the price of beef has not only Burger King, but other fast food chains pushing their chicken menu items. “As beef prices have increased significantly over the last 20 years or so consumption has gone down,” Macedo said. “Chicken is growing in consumption quite a lot.”
“Restaurant chains are advertising chicken more as beef and pork costs surge. Wholesale beef prices have gained 11 percent this year and 51 percent in the past five years, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.”
Burger King’s new Chicken Big King will cost $3.59 according to the Huffington Post and is set to be released to Burger King’s across the US by April 19th. Will you be trying to Chicken Big King sandwich?
