Over the last few years, it seems like there’s no end to classic horror remakes. Now it’s time for Rosemary’s Baby to be re-imagined for a limited series that will run on NBC. Unlike the Carrie film reboot, this classic horror film has been turned into a mini series that shares the same tone as A&E’s Bates Motel , and NBC’s Hannibal . Both have garnered critical acclaim and huge ratings for their respective networks.
NBC is still in a ratings slump, and over the last year it’s pulled out all the stops, including a live televised production of The Sound of Music to pull themselves up from their bootstraps. Even though they have seen success with their Silence of The Lambs prequel series, Rosemary’s Baby is still considered a bit of a risk for the network. Going by the trailer that was just released, it looks like it’s a risk worth taking.
Rosemary’s Baby stars Zoe Saldana, Patrick J. Abrams, and Jason Isaacs in the lead roles. Instead of being a reboot of the Roman Polanski film, this is derived from the novel by Ira Levin. Regardless, the story is pretty much identical with the exception of tone. A woman becomes pregnant and very quickly she realizes that something isn’t quite right, and then the horror begins.
The synopsis for the Rosemary’s Baby mini series is as follows:
“Rosemary (Zoe Saldana, “Avatar,” “Star Trek Into Darkness”) and Guy (Patrick J. Adams, “Suits”) are incredulous at their good fortune and find comfort in a strange city among their new friends and neighbors, the Castevets. This well-to-do successful older couple takes the newcomers under their wing and become very involved with the Woodhouses’ lives. Things seem to be perfect as Rosemary becomes pregnant and Guy’s career takes off. As their spirited best friend, Guy’s co-worker Julie (Christina Cole), spends quality time with Rosemary in the city, she finds Rosemary’s health worrying and cautions both of them that something isn’t right. Soon there are other signs warning Rosemary to be careful.”
As we’re introduced to the trailer, there’s a few obvious text transitions that set the tone before the horror sets in. Rosemary, played by Zoe Saldana has the perfect job, the perfect love, which makes for “the perfect time” for “a new life.” Except for the fact that the new life brings fear. That said the terror happens early on, and viewers are subjected to what looks like Zoe Saldana giving her best impression of Halle Berry playing a mentally unstable woman, as Rosemary quickly starts to spiral out of control.
Although the acting doesn’t look like it’s a fantastic turn for the actress, Rosemary’s Baby looks like it has just the right amount of drama to pull audiences in for some guilty pleasure viewing.
