Pregnant Woman Stabbed To Death, Baby Survives The Attack
A pregnant woman was stabbed to death in Gloucester City, New Jersey, on Sunday evening. Although the woman was killed, her unborn child survived the brutal attack. Philly.com reports that Scarlett Wilson, age 42, was seven months pregnant.
Witnesses said Wilson and her 21-year-old son, Leon, got into a verbal argument at approximately 9:00 pm on Sunday evening. Assistant Camden County Prosecutor Howard Gilford said Leon eventually pushed his mother to the floor and stabbed her “about two dozen times.”
When authorities arrived on scene, the suspect walked out of the home with a knife in his hand. Witnesses said the knife and Leon’s clothing were covered in blood. Inside the home, authorities found Wilson unresponsive.
Scarlett was transported to Cooper University Hospital for treatment. However, she was pronounced dead at 10:43 pm. Although the pregnant woman was stabbed to death, her baby boy survived the attack and was delivered alive.
As the expectant mother was seven moths pregnant, her newborn child was named “Seven.” The baby is currently listed in critical but stable condition. Following his release from the hospital, the child will be placed in the care of relatives.
Prosecutor Gilford said Leon has a prior criminal history which includes possession of a controlled substance. As he failed to appear for several prior court dates, he is considered a flight risk. Leon remains incarcerated on $1 million bond.
Gilford suggested that Leon suffered from prior mental health issues. However, he did not elaborate on the defendant’s current mental condition. During his arraignment, Leon appeared to be calm and did not display any emotion.
Leon’s aunt, Michelle Wilson, said her nephew is “a very good kid… always has been.” Michelle said the family is relying on prayer to make it through the difficult situation.
Anthony Land, Leon’s cousin, said the defendant “was a good kid… and he didn’t mean to do that.”
Prosecutors have not discussed a motive or the reason Leon and his mother were arguing. The Wilson family is torn, as they have already lost Scarlett and Leon is facing 30 years to life.
Although Leon clearly stabbed his mother, his friends and family said the violent outburst was uncharacteristic. Leon has a criminal history. However, it is unclear whether he ever convicted of a violent crime.
Despite the fact that the pregnant woman was stabbed to death, her baby is expected to live. Relatives are thankful that some good came out of the horrific tragedy.
