Murda Marz, real name Shmar Parris, 25, lived in Toronto, but was originally from Nova Scotia.
An SUV was seen fleeing the scene. No arrests have yet been made, but investigators are in the process of gathering up security footage that may have taken by nearby businesses and residents. “Police say after the shooting, a light-colored SUV was seen driving erratically on the westbound Gardiner Expressway at Bathurst Street. Police say the SUV grazed a cement barrier as it fled along the Gardiner and likely has damage to its passenger side. Police are hoping to get a paint sample from the spot where the car contacted the barrier.
Detective Sgt. Steve Ryan said that “I would say his lifestyle was his demise. He was the intended victim.” Added Ryan, “It’s a brazen attack. Shooting at a moving vehicle is gutsy and stupid, actually.”
Several Murda Marz rap videos are posted on YouTube: “Videos of Parris feature Toronto prominently, as he raps about money, murder, cars and life on the street. In several pictures posted online, he can be seen wearing an encrusted gun pendant on a chain around his neck.”
Music promoter Fred E. Fame, who previously included the slain hip-hop artist in baseball-style rap artist trading cards, said that “The whole thing is ironic. His name is Murda Marz and he just got murdered.”
