One Direction’s ‘Midnight Memories’ Declared The Best-Selling Album Of 2013
Midnight Memories, the latest album from One Direction, was recently declared the best-selling album of 2013.
While recording artists such as Miley Cyrus and Katy Perry had no problem selling several copies of their respective releases, they simply couldn’t outperform the British heartthrobs on a global scale. According to NME, Midnight Memories sold more copies worldwide than any other record released last year.
Eminem’s Marshall Mathers LP 2 may have sold quite a few copies upon its release, but One Direction managed to surpass the rapper’s latest endeavor as well. In fact, Midnight Memories moved a whopping four million copies during in the first five weeks of release. As a result, the record found its way to the top of the charts in no less than 19 countries.
Express reports that analysts discovered that Midnight Memories was the best-selling record of 2013 after taking a look some industry-oriented data. In addition to looking at physical sales, the British Phonographic Industry investigated streaming and download info.
The BPI said in a recent statement:
“Around one in eight albums sold around the world are by British artists and One Direction are certainly playing their part in maintaining this fantastic achievement. It all helps to add up to a golden decade of global success for British music, and with some huge albums out later this year, not least from the likes of Coldplay in May and a rumoured new release from Adele, there must be another good chance that a British artist will again top the global best-sellers list come the end of the 2014.”
