‘Community’ Creator Dan Harmon Hopes Donald Glover Will Eventually Return
Community mastermind Dan Harmon is hoping that Donald Glover will eventually return to the television series. Assuming, of course, it gets renewed for a sixth season.
Harmon and several of the Community cast members recently discussed Glover’s departure from the show during this year’s PaleyFest in Los Angeles. According to The Wrap, Harmon joked about returning to the series after getting fired shortly before the start of season four.
“And then these pens came down from the ceiling and we signed our contracts. And then they went up to a UFO and we heard a cackling, and we ran out to the sidewalk and it was Donald Glover flying away,” the Community creator explained.
Although he joked a bit about Glover’s departure from the series, Harmon explained that they didn’t try to force the guy to stay or attempt to change his mind. Instead, the Community team addressed the situation “head-on.” Glover reportedly left the show to pursue a music career as Childish Gambino.
“We knew something was going to happen that we didn’t want to happen and on the other hand we knew that there was going to be energy from it that we could get stories from. You will never be able to replace Donald. I think it’s just the start of our search for Spock in the ‘Community’ movie,” Dan said.
He added, “I’m just going to go home, kill a chicken, drink its blood, make a ‘Blair Witch’ thing out of its bones, pray to every deity that I have to that if we do get a sixth season that Donald will have tired of his Donald-ness.”
Although NBC hasn’t given the greenlight to a sixth season of Community, The Hollywood Reporter points out that the cast and crew seem almost positive that the network will move forward with another batch of episodes. This means that a Community movie is possibly looming on the horizon as well.
“We know there’s going to be a sixth season or else you’ll probably show up with pitchforks and torches,” star Joel McHale told the gathering of Community fans.
Harmon added, “The only thing weirder for… would be not getting a sixth season.”
While some Community fans would love to see Donald Glover return for what could be the final season, it’s currently unknown if the actor-turned-rapper will decide to make an appearance on the program at some point down the road.
