Lil Wayne Explains Why He’s No Longer The ‘Best Rapper Alive’
Lil Wayne never had a problem telling folks that he was the “best rapper alive.” However, Weezy doesn’t feel the need to use that phrase anymore.
In addition to revealing that he’d never pick a fight with Kanye West, Lil Wayne discussed why he doesn’t boast about himself the way he did in the past. According Stack, he shed the title after assembling a group of extremely talented artists on his Young Money label. As such, he wants the students to rise above the master.
“At that time [when I first adapted that title], I [didn’t] care who [was] on the mic. But now I have artists [and I say,] ‘I want you to be better than me.’ I want everybody to feel like they’re the best at what they do. It ain’t about that now — it’s about us,” he explained during his recent chat with Elliott Wilson.
Although Weezy doesn’t think he’s the best rapper alive anymore, Lil Wayne hopes that people will see him as one of the greats. According to MTV News, the rapper thinks his name deserves mention among folks like Tupac and Eminem.
“I definitely look at it like that. I don’t think that the new artists even putting us in their competition. When I say ‘us’ I hope that I fit in that ‘us.’ I hope I fit in that and if I do, I hope they look at it as I’m trying to get there. Me, I still look at it like I’m trying to get there,” Lil Wayne said during the CRWN interview.
Lil Wayne is preparing to release what is possibly his final solo effort. Tha Carter V is presently scheduled to hit store shelves on May 5. Although the rapper promises something a little older and wiser, he understands that the album will have its fair share of detractors. In fact, he’s already preparing himself for the criticism.
“They gon compare my new stuff to my old stuff like an athlete. They compared their new play to their old play, but when you finish, they can’t do nothing but say, ‘Ooh, look at what he done.’ So I know what I’ve done, I know what I did and I know what I can do… and they do, too,” Weezy said.
Are you a fan of Lil Wayne? Do you think the guy is one of the best rappers alive? Should folks list his name alongside artists such as Biggie, Tupac, and Jay Z?
