Scottish singer-songwriter, producer, and DJ, Calvin Harris, has a new single with the title “Summer”, released online on March 14. The song features Harris on vocals for the first time since “Feel So Close”, which was included in his 2012 album 18 Months .
The 30-year-old musician was born Adam Richard Wiles in Dumfries, Scotland. He first got into music as a teen, recording demo electronic music by 1999. At 21, his songs “Brighter Days” and “Da Bongos” were released, and in 2004 he worked with artist Ayah Marar to come up with “Let Me Know.”
Harris posted his music on his MySpace account, where he was discovered by producer Tommie Sunshine. His music was soon released on Sunshine’s Xylophone Jones Recordings. In 2006, he signed contracts with Sony BMG, EMI, and Three Six Zero Group. His first album was titled I Created Disco and released in June 2007, and showed how Harris was influenced by Eighties electronica. The album sold more than 100,000 copies in the UK, getting the eighth spot on the UK Albums Chart.

In 2009, Harris released his second album, Ready for the Weekend , which went straight to the top of the UK Albums Chart upon its debut. Like the previous album, it was certified gold by the British Phonographic Industry. The lead single “I’m Not Alone” debuted at No. 1, and the follow-up “Ready for the Weekend” claimed the third spot. “Flashback,” the third single, reached No. 18 on the singles charts, and “You Used to Hold Me,” the fourth off the album, made its way to No. 27.
Harris collaborated with American artist Kelis to release the single “Bounce” in 2011. The same year, he released “Feel So Close.” Both singles debuted at No. 2 on the UK Singles Chart, in June and August respectively. The song “Feel So Close” was also Harris’ first solo entry in the US Billboard Hot 100, reaching the No. 12 spot.
Harris announced in 2012 that his third album 18 Months was in the works and would feature artists such as Rihanna, Kelis, Ne-Yo, and Ellie Goulding. The album was released in October. Five of the singles were certified hits by the Recording Industry Association of America. The singles “Let’s Go” and “I Need Your Love” featuring Ellie Goulding both received platinum certifications. His single with Rihanna, “We Found Love,” was a worldwide hit, and was certified multi-platinum.
“Summer” could not have come at a better time in the US, with the country still reeling from the effects of one of its most severe winters. The song’s lively electropop beats surely beat whatever bleak memory listeners have of the gloomy season.
Harris will perform the new single at this year’s Coachella .
