‘The Hunger Games’ Star Jennifer Lawrence Gave Shailene Woodley Advice Regarding ‘Divergent’
The Hunger Games star Jennifer Lawrence once gave a fellow actress advice about signing on for what could become a very lucrative franchise.
If there’s one person who knows a thing or two about starring in an adaptation of a popular young adult novel, then it’s definitely Lawrence. The Hunger Games changed her career in more ways than one, which is why Shailene Woodley sought advice from Lawrence before signing on for Divergent.
The Times of India reports that Woodley wanted to know about the risks associated with tackling such a high-profile gig. Since The Hunger Games is one of the most successful franchises running at the moment, she decided to seek some words of wisdom from Lawrence.
“I have still yet to meet Jennifer in the flesh, but I had a slight interaction with her where I asked her about ‘Hunger Games’ and what it was like, and her life and how much it has changed,” Woodley explained.
She added, “It was nice asking someone who has been through the process and is kind of seasoned in the young adult franchise. She gave me really beautiful advice and said that I should definitely take it. ‘It will be the best thing that ever happened. But don’t be an idiot, do a sex tape, [or] do drugs. And go to Whole Foods when your movie opens.'”
The Hollywood Reporter asked the actress what would happen if the Hunger Games heroine and the Divergent scrapper met in a dark alley. Although the publication probably wanted a definitive answer, Woodley decided to keep things diplomatic.
“If my character and Katniss from ‘The Hunger Games’ battled it out? I don’t know. I don’t feel like they would actually battle. I feel like it’d be like, ‘You’re a strong lady? I’m a strong lady, too. Let’s combine forces and bring it together,'” she explained.
Divergent is definitely getting a lot of buzz before its release later this year. Unfortunately, few young adult adaptations have proved as successful as The Hunger Games. The Host, The Mortal Instruments, and Vampire Academy failed to make big impressions at the box office in North America.
The Hunger Games: Catching Fire was one of the top-grossing motion pictures of 2013. As of this writing, the movie has generated a deeply impressive $863 million worldwide. Altogether, the franchise has collected well over $1 billion from moviegoers. This doesn’t include the cash these films have made on the home video market.
Do you think Divergent has the potential to become the next Hunger Games?
