San Antonio HS Coach Fired Over ‘Upskirt’ Videos Of Female Students
A San Antonio high school football and track coach lost his job Wednesday when he allegedly confessed to accusations that he secretly shot “upskirt” videos of female students in a class where he was a substitute teacher.
Larry Ruiz was a part-time assistant football coach at the largest San Antonio, Texas, private Catholic high school, Antonian College Preparatory School in North San Antonio. He served in that position during the 2012 and 2013 seasons, and he also coached track and field.
But he served as a substitute teacher as well, and that’s where he got into trouble. According to complaints from students, Ruiz, 28, placed his cell phone on the floor as he sat behind his desk in the classroom. When female students would approach his desk, the cell phone would take a video recording up their skirts.
One student reported the apparent invasive filming and school administrators immediately pulled Ruiz from the classroom where he was substituting. According to Antonian Principal Gilber Saenz, he confronted Ruiz with the accusation and the part-time coach admitted that he was indeed taking “upskirt” videos.
Saenz immediately fired Ruiz.
But when police in the San Antonio district of Castle Hills came to question Ruiz at his home that night, the surreptitious upskirt videographer refused to cooperate or hand over his cell phone. Police were in the process Thursday of obtaining a warrant for the phone to examine the video contents.
But Principal Saenz said that he had a look at the materials on Ruiz’s device.
“I had the opportunity to see some of the videos on the phone,” said Saenz. “It was very clear to me that this was very serious.”
There appear to have been several San Antonio girls who were inappropriately filmed by Ruiz. But no charges have yet been filed against the fired coach.
“It’s a sad day when a person we have trust in does this kind of thing,” said Saenz. “All that we can do is to be present to our students who may be upset and let the authorities investigate what happened.”
It is unclear what the exact counts against Ruiz would be if San Antonio police file charges, but teachers who engage in improper relationships with students face up to 20 years in prison.
