Lady Gaga Won’t Play Inside A Giant Doritos Vending Machine At SXSW
Lady Gaga really wants to play inside a giant Doritos vending machine at SXSW. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like she’ll get her wish.
The annual film and music event at Austin, Texas welcomed the extremely peculiar venue two years ago. Folks who were officially granted permission to play at the vending machine set up shop where the aforementioned foodstuff would arrive if Godzilla stopped by with some pocket change and a hankering for a crunchy snack.
According to the folks at Stereo Gum, Lady Gaga really wanted to perform at the Doritos Stage during this year’s SXSW. Since the venue probably couldn’t accommodate the large number of people who would attend such a performance, officials denied the singer’s request. Sometimes it sucks to have a large and loyal following.

Austin’s Music And Entertainment division manager Don Pitts recently sent an email to the folks at Austin360 to explain the situation. In short: Lady Gaga is just too popular to play the enormous Doritos vending machine. This may upset Gaga to no end, but apparently there’s simply no wiggle room.
Pitts told the publication:
“Our conclusion was based primarily on public safety concerns. As part of the review process the applicant provides a talent list to the city team (AFD, APD, ATCEMS and Office of Special Events) to review and we can adjust public resources as needed. We look at the size and capacity of the location covered by the permit being sought and how it fits with the anticipated attendance, based on event capacity and promotion. At the end of the day, it’s a parking lot. We informed the applicant that we would support relocation to an established venue with the necessary permanent infrastructure.”
However, there’s still a chance Lady Gaga could make a memorable appearance at this year’s event. According to Consequence of Sound, the “Poker Face” singer could possibly take the role of SXSW’s keynote speaker. While this honor is generally reserved for more seasoned musicians, the singer’s popularity could ultimately help her prospects.
Rumor has it that Universal Music wants to get Lady Gaga a very visible position at SXSW to recover some of the money they spent on the release of ARTPOP. The New York Post suggests that the record label lost a significant amount of money after the album failed to find an audience.
Are you disappointed that Austin’s Music And Entertainment division denied Lady Gaga’s request to play the giant Doritos vending machine at SXSW?
