Katy Perry’s ‘Dark Horse’ Continues To Reign Supreme On The Billboard Singles Chart

Katy Perry is still the reigning champ of the Billboard Singles Chart.

Although Pharrell Williams’ Despicable Me 2 tune “Happy” almost knocked “Dark Horse” off its throne, Perry’s contagious song managed to hold onto the top spot. As Williams’ track continues to gain in popularity — the singer will perform the tune at the Academy Awards — there’s a strong possibility Perry could lose her place in the coming days.

This is the fourth week in a row that Katy Perry’s latest release has claimed the number one position on the Billboard Singles Chart. The song reportedly started getting significant placement on radio long before the singer decided to make the track an official single.

Perry previously said of the song’s success:

“This number one is the most unexpected one I’ve ever had. Dark Horse’ has been a dark horse of a song, since August when the KatyCats voted to release it early on iTunes, before ‘PRISM’ even came out. I’m so thrilled and grateful to have these moments.”

The popularity of “Dark Horse” likely helped push PRISM over the one million mark. The Inquisitr reported in January that Katy Perry’s latest full-length album officially reached Platinum status in the United States. This is the third album in her discography to sell over a million copies.

The singer said she used plenty of personal experiences to help craft the material on her recent album. She told 92.3 NOW last year:

“I was in kind of a dark place in my life. But I transitioned, I let a lot of light in — and that’s what a prism does. A beam goes through it and all of a sudden it shoots out all kinds of colors on the other side. And that’s how I feel like I am; I let a lot of light in, it served me well, it taught me great lessons.”

While Perry continues to enjoy a significant amount of success, Mariah Carey is having some trouble keeping up with her fellow singers. According to the Examiner, Carey’s latest single “You’re Mine” dropped off the iTunes Top 100 chart on Sunday. This certainly doesn’t bode well for the Mariah’s long-delayed album The Art of Letting Go.
