Kendrick Lamar recently received an apology from fellow rapper Macklemore after he took home the trophy for Best Rap Album at the 2014 Grammy Awards.
Many people were a little irritated that Macklemore and Ray Lewis took home the award at the event earlier this year. In addition to beating Lamar, The Heist managed to best album released by Drake , Kanye West, and Jay Z. Needless to say, some folks weren’t happy about the situation.
To help calm the waters and ease tensions, Macklemore sent an apology to Kendrick Lamar in the form of a text message. The contents of that communication were ultimately posted to Instagram .
The Grammy-winning rapper explained:
“You got robbed. I wanted you to win. You should have. It’s weird and sucks that I robbed you. I was gonna say that during the speech. Then the music started playing during my speech and I froze. Anyway, you know what it is. Congrats on this year and your music. Appreciate you as an artist and as a friend. Much love.”
Macklemore also provided the following explanation for sending the text to Kendrick Lamar. Apparently he just wanted to set the record straight:
“My text to Kendrick after the show. He deserved best rap album… I’m honored and completely blown away to win anything much less 4 Grammys. But in that category, he should have won IMO. And that’s taking nothing away from ‘The Heist.’ Just giving GKMC it’s proper respect.. With that being said, thank you to the fans. You’re the reason we were on that stage tonight. And to play Same Love on that platform was a career.”
Although some people were quite pleased with the apology, others thought it was a little weird. One person who clearly wasn’t impressed with Macklemore’s text message was Canadian-born rapper Drake. In his opinion, the apology was “wack as f***.”
“I was like, ‘You won. Why are you posting your text message? Just chill. Take your W, and if you feel you didn’t deserve it, go get better — make better music.’ It felt cheap. It didn’t feel genuine,” Drake recently told Rolling Stone .
He added, “Why do that? Why feel guilt? You think those guys would pay homage to you if they won… To name just Kendrick? That made me feel funny. No, in that case, you robbed everybody. We all need text messages!”
