Imagine Dragons Changing Things Up For ‘Into The Night’ Tour

Imagine Dragons, fresh off a Best Rock Performance Grammy win for Radioactive, has just embarked on an arena tour. The Into The Night tour, which began on Saturday night in Boise, Idaho, is a bit of a departure for the award-winning band, as they have never played venues of the size planned for this tour. As a result, Imagine Dragons may just have a few surprises in store for their devoted fan base.

Imagine Dragons frontman Dan Reynolds recently spoke with MTV News about the tour, explaining the mindset of the band and why they felt compelled to make some changes for this one:

“We’ve really changed everything, in a lot of ways, for this final tour, because there are probably quite a few people who have seen us on previous runs of this tour, so we wanted to bring something fresh for them… and also for us,” said Reynolds. “We’ve played these songs a lot of times now over the past two years, so we are going to be playing some different songs [on this tour]; the setup’s all different, electronically there are things going on that are different. It’s a much bigger scale. We’ve never played arenas, so it’s a different realm for us.”

This will be the final Imagine Dragons tour in support of their 2012 debut album Night Visions, which opened at No. 2 on the Billboard Top 200 and has enjoyed both critical and commercial success. The band has previously toured twice in support of the album, but the Into The Night tour is not so much a promotional effort as it is an exclamation point for the album. Bassist Ben McKee acknowledged the long journey the band has taken to reach this apex. “This is the part of the race where the marathon runner starts having the physical breakdown at the end,” McKee noted. “[Your] body’s failing, collapsing in a pile of twitching limbs.”

The conception of this tour could prove to be a real treat for Imagine Dragons fans, as the play list promises to be very interesting and eclectic. While Reynolds has been somewhat cryptic about possible songs, the band has revealed they will be covering the Rush classic Tom Sawyer, among others.

“It’s just an intimidating song,” says Reynolds of this bold choice. “It’s so cool, because I found this whole new register. I’ve been taking additional voice lessons and figuring out how to tune into my upper range more. The band loves prog, so it’s kind of their dream.”

The 2014 Imagine Dragons Into The Night tour will play 21 total dates, concluding on March 15th in Denver.
