Robin Wright’s ‘House Of Cards’ Role Not A Hillary Clinton Clone

Robin Wright is one half of a cool power couple on the hit Netflix series House of Cards. Wright, who spoke to Capitol Fire about her character, said that her character has nothing to do with Hillary Clinton.

Although people’s immediate perception that her character was Clinton related, that’s not where Robin Wright is coming from with the character. Yes, she’s a strong political wife, but she’s not Hillary.

“People were suggesting to base the character on Hillary Clinton or other strong women personas, and I didn’t want to do that.”

For those who aren’t in the know, Robin Wright plays Claire Underwood, who is the wife of Kevin Spacey’s character Frank Underwood. For her role on the series, Wright earned a Golden Globe back in January in her Best Actress category. Seeing as it’s a drama, Kevin Spacey and Wright try to keep things light and “very goofy” when they’re in between takes.

Robin elaborated on those goofy times on the set of their Washington, D.C. series. “We giggle a lot.”

As for the highly anticipated second season of House of Cards, Wright said:

“Just wait. What we have in store for you guys … In [House of Cards Executive Producer] David Fincher’s words, ‘You will be tied and skinned.’ We’re sworn to secrecy!”

Even though Robin Wright is having a gratifying experience on House of Cards, it doesn’t mean she’s forgotten about her hard times. Sean Penn and Robin Wright were married for twenty years but experienced troubles later in their marriage. The couple eventually divorced in 2010. Since then she’s moved on to actor Ben Foster, who she’s engaged to.

Of her situation with Sean Penn, she told The Telegraph:

“Divorce in and of itself, and with children, is devastating. Worse than that. One of the reasons why we got back together and broke up so much was trying to keep the family together… and we did that for a long time. Sean sees the kids. They see him. They see me. We’ve all got our own lives.”

Moving on is hard, but if you’re in Hollywood it comes with its own set of problems, usually. Robin Wright explains how awkward it was for her dating after being married for so long.

“I’d never, ever been asked out on a date before. Never. I was frickin’ married my whole life, and even before that I hadn’t been asked out. “Ben has an ‘R’ tattoo in the same place [on their left hands]. I’ve been so anti-tattoos my whole life. But doing this felt right because we’re not that traditional.”

House of Cards premieres its whole season season on Netflix on Friday.
