‘The LEGO Movie’ Builds Beyond Expectations, Say Critics

The LEGO Movie was a surprisingly entertaining, if not quite “awesome” comedy experience, according to critics. Most of them loved it, while others found it little more than a mindless action comedy.

Initially, the idea of a LEGO movie was considered a pretty dumb idea when some of us at The Inquisitr thought about it. It even began throwing in voice acting talents from some thespians who haven’t really shown a tendency to be picky about the movies they appear in. Morgan Freeman, Channing Tatum, Will Farrell, and a handful of others were revealed to be a part of the cast, and some of us still sat on the fence over the pending quality of the film.

Then the trailers began to drop and show us what promised to be quite a visual and comical treat. According to the LEGO Movie review roundup from the critics, the film will not disappoint, and it might just be the best animated movie you see this year.

According to the Hollywood Reporter , it’s obvious that the idea behind this film had been tested in other formats for quite a while. After all, we have had countless big name movie-based video games released under the LEGO license and they usually always turned out fun and often hilarious. There have been YouTube videos dedicated to reenacting famous movies like Star Wars , showing that the LEGO franchise had potential for so much more than just a box of toy bricks. Michael Rechtshaffen says The LEGO Movie takes the stale animated movie idea and “shows ’em how it’s done.”

Kyle Smith of the New York Post disagrees, stating that the film is “uninvolving, like an 8-year-old emptying a bucket of plastic blocks.” His problem with the movie is that it doesn’t seem to stick to any storyline, instead trying to wow us with its comedy and references. In a way, he likens it to the infamous “Movie” movies, though the LEGO treatment is almost Simpsons funny when it makes references to other films.

The LEGO Movie is about a construction worker who really has no remarkable qualities about him, despite the ravings of a wise old prophet. The villain (Will Farrell) is an industrialist mastermind who threatens to use Kragle, or crazy glue, to make everybody stick in place. Even though Batman, Wonder Woman, the Green Lantern, a few Star Wars characters, and Gandalf from Lord of the Rings apparently exist in the storyline, the unremarkable Emmet is dubbed “the Special” and expected to save the day.

Time Out London says that even though The LEGO Movie seems to have the toy pedigree already going for it, the film doesn’t depend on its source material for laughs or action. Instead it pokes fun at its source material. Tom Huddleston claims that the film is “bold, berserk and strangely beautiful, exuding LEGO-love from every frame.”

The critics think this film is one to check out, even if it has flaws that can be easily dismissed. If you’ve seen it, what do you think?
