Floyd Mayweather Jr. had a miserable Super Bowl night after making and losing a $10.4 million bet on the Denver Broncos. Or at least that’s the story that circulated the internet on Super Bowl Sunday.
Reports surfaced this weekend that the boxer laid down a gigantic bet on the Broncos to win Super Bowl XLVII. The Broncos were slightly favored going into the game, but were dominated by the Seattle Seahawks in all phases of the game, losing 43-8.
Even before the game ended, internet commenters poked fun at Floyd Mayweather Jr. for the ill-fated bet, even directing him to a suicide hotline.
It was good for a laugh, but Mayweather said none of it is true.
On Monday, the boxer issued a statement putting an end to the Super Bowl bet rumors while also engaging in a bit of self promotion.
Mayweather told Mashable :
“Congratulations to the Seattle Seahawks for winning the Super Bowl. For the record, I did NOT bet $10 million on The Broncos. As a matter of fact, I didn’t bet at alI. I can’t control what rumors are put out there. But good or bad publicity keeps me relevant. The only thing I would bet $10 million on is MYSELF because from the looks of my record, I’m a guaranteed WIN!!! I’m focused on that, my company www.themoneyteam.com and my tech investments.”
Floyd Mayweather Jr. may actually get the chance this year. After Manny Pacquiao pulled off a comeback win against Brandon Rios , his promoter Bob Arum started up the talk of a bout with Mayweather .
“On our side the answer is yes [the fight can be made in 2014], we’re very open to it,” Arum told the media. “There are ways it can get done, they have to dumb down the rhetoric, we are prepared to dumb down the rhetoric and get it done. There is no real impediment to having that fight happen whether it will or not depends completely on the Mayweather side. I can see it happening but I can’t predict that it will happen because it takes two to tango.”
If he does go through with the bout, Floyd Mayweather Jr. could have some nice cash for a Super Bowl bet next year.
