Former Hannah Montana Star, Miley Cyrus, Praises Disney Channel’s First Gay Couple
Even though she doesn’t like being referred to as the former Hannah Montana star, and has been very public about how the Disney Channel show misrepresented her real-life personality, Miley Cyrus seemed to put aside her personal feelings towards the channel for a moment. After Disney Channel officially introduced their first same-sex couple, Cyrus seemed to only have positive things to say about the network. The 21-year-old took to Twitter to express her feelings:
“Is this true?!?!?!” Cyrus wrote on Twitter. “I commend Disney for making this step into the light of this generation. They control…so much of what kids think! Life isn’t bright sets & wardrobe & kids becoming superstars! This is INSPIRING.”
Liberty Voice stated that Disney Channel has traditionally been a conservative family oriented company, “promoting values through families in many of their programs and movies.” In today’s day and age, the traditional view of what makes up a family has changed in many ways.
The days where a family was made up of only a mother and a father as heads of the household are long gone. Families are now made up of a variety of members. Some have a mother and father, others have two mother or two fathers, and of course some are led by other family members, such as grandparents, aunts, uncles, or even older siblings.
Reports state that as times have changed, so has the Disney Channel. The company now recognizes that the time is now right to incorporate these changes into their programing. So how did they do it? A previous report by The Inquisitr stated that a spokesperson for Disney Channel revealed that the story line for Disney’s first gay couple had been in the playbook for some time and that the Good Luck Charlie creators wanted to make the depiction of Disney’s first same-sex couple as real and non-stereotypical as possible.
“This particular storyline was developed under the consultancy of child development experts and community advisers. Like all Disney Channel programming, it was developed to be relevant to kids and families around the world and to reflect themes of diversity and inclusiveness.”
According to the Examiner, Good Luck Charlie‘s same-sex couple is made up of two blondes by the names of Susan and Cheryl. The couple’s introduction was a brief one, as they appeared at the door with their in-show daughter, Taylor for a “special play date with the family of the main character, Charlie.”
Of course, the news of Disney’s first gay couple didn’t sit well with everyone. The conservative advocacy group, One Million Moms, was outraged by the network’s choice to include the couple in the show. In an earlier report by The Inquisitr, the group is urging its followers and “all decent members of society” to “urge Disney Channel to edit or cut the subversive episode entirely.”
