Bill Maher Jokes About Mass Shooting At Awards Ceremony [Video]

Bill Maher seems to think that a mass shooting is a subject appropriate for his own brand of satire.

On Friday night’s installment of Real Time with Bill Maher, he had this to say as part of the “new rules” segment:

Now that liberals have forwarded their agenda by inserting a mass gay wedding into the Grammys, conservatives must match them tit-for-tat by having a mass shooting at the Country Music Awards.”

Maher’s remarks were accompanied by an image of what appears to be country music star Carrie Underwood holding a semi-automatic weapon and one hand and a pistol in the other.

The studio audience thought this quip was funny (see embed below). Does anyone else?

Queen Latifah performed a mass wedding of homosexual and heterosexual couples at the 56th Annual Grammy Awards on January 26.

Bill Maher is a strong advocate of gun control initiatives, having previously called “bullsh*t” (his word) on the right to keep and bear arms under the Second Amendment.

According to Politico, “Maher, a vocal proponent of gun control, has frequently lambasted conservatives and the Republican Party on the issue of firearms, having previously called them ‘gun nuts.’ Maher also slammed Congress last spring, specifically Democrats, who he said were weak on the debate of gun control after a push to ban assault weapons ultimately shifted to background checks.”

Ironically, Bill Maher himself may be a so-called gun nut too. In May, he conceded that he owns guns for personal protection: “As long as we live in the gun country, I ain’t giving up my gun … there have been 12 home invasions in my neighborhood in the last year … I have two guns, one upstairs and one down.”

Maher presumably lives in an upscale Beverly Hills, Calif., enclave with presumably a far lower crime rate than most communities.

Given what has happened in this country over the past few years, even by the minimal and/or irreverent standards of Real Time, should Bill Maher have told a joke involving a mass shooting?
