Lady Gaga Scores A Razzie Nomination For Her ‘Machete Kills’ Performance
Lady Gaga recently snagged a Razzie Nomination for her performance in director Robert Rodriguez’s action-packed sequel Machete Kills.
While most critics seemed to think the follow-up to his grindhouse throwback was pretty pathetic, the folks behind the Razzies decided that Lady Gaga’s turn in the flick was particularly awful. As a result, the singer scored a Worst Supporting Actress nomination.
Lady Gaga is up against Salma Hayek (Grown Ups 2), Katherine Heigl (The Big Wedding), Kim Kardashian (Tyler Perry’s Temptation), and Lindsay Lohan (Scary Movie 5, InAPPropriate Comedy) for the award.
Robert Rodriguez told the Philadelphia Inquirer last year that Lady Gaga is a pretty big fan of the first Machete flick. Since the singer clearly loved the movie, Rodriguez decided to write a part with her in mind. He also gave Gaga one of the meanest back-handed compliments in recent memory.
“So I wrote her a part and she came down and I could tell she was going to be good. And the camera loves her like nobody’s business. You may even look at her and think, okay, she may not be the prettiest girl. But you put the camera on her and she’s the prettiest girl. It was a lot of fun. I can’t wait to work with her again. I may have already worked with her again,” Rodriguez told the publication ahead of the film’s release.
Of course, Lady Gaga isn’t the only singer who ended up snagging a Razzie nomination this year. Selena Gomez may have earned some strong marks for her turn in writer-director Harmony Korine’s Spring Breakers, but her performance in the action-thriller Getaway obviously didn’t do her any favors.
Although the Ethan Hawke flick was one of the worst-reviewed movies of the year, apparently it didn’t qualify for the 2014 Razzie Awards. If you’re curious to see which movies made the cut this year, then check out a short list of this year’s nominees below.
The Razzie nomination caps off what was a pretty rough year for Lady Gaga. In addition to turning in a lousy performance in Machete Kills, the singer’s album Artpop also failed to make a dent on the sales charts. This prompted Lady Gaga to issue an apology to her fans.
“Give me a chance to show you the meaning of seeing art all around you. Open your hearts to me again that I may show you the joy of us coming together through our talents, that we are stronger as a unit than when we are alone. Forgive me monsters. Forgive me ARTPOP. You are my whole world,” she explained.
