Fox has now confirmed that Glee is making the big move from Lima, Ohio to New York City, at least as far as the setting is concerned. Over the last few months, due to the challenges Glee has faced since Cory Monteith’s death, there have been rumors that creator Ryan Murphy rebuilt the series from the ground up and rearranged everything he had planned for the show.
During the TCA panel on Monday, Fox’s chairman Kevin Reilly confirmed the rumors that Glee’s setting would permanently change over to New York to focus on Rachel (Lea Michele), Kurt (Chris Colfer), Santana (Naya Rivera), and a few others who will graduate and move to the New York setting. Reilly didn’t give out too much information about the changes, but he did mention that there were some big shake ups coming for Glee’s new direction, which will take place over the remainder of this season, and during season six, which will be Glee’s last.
“Some are going to be graduating and moving; creatively, it would be ridiculous that everybody moves to New York. There will be some that will graduate and move on and they’ll arc back in when we do special episodes. They’ll always be a part of it… But for this season, there will be a graduation, several of the cast members will move on and a few others will go to New York.”
While we don’t know who will be “moving on” or in other words, booted from Glee , we can bet that Jane Lynch will be coming to New York. Reilly had said that so long as there’s Glee, Lynch will have a job. We’re not so sure what that means in terms of bringing Coach Sylvester over to New York or what she would do outside of Lima’s setting, but we can definitely see her bossing around the core group which is believed to be Rachel, Kurt, Santana, and new additions from Lima, Blaine (Darren Criss), Sam (Chord Overstreet), and Artie (Kevin McHale).
Glee’s setting divided between Lima, Ohio and New York City before Cory Monteith’s death, but his character Finn was a bridge between the two locations, and for the most part, tied everything in together. When Monteith died, a hiatus was granted in shooting for the writers to work Monteith’s death into the show, which resulted in a touching tribute to Finn.
Glee will return on Tuesday, February 25.
