‘Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition’ PC Patch Not Planned, Won’t Port From PS4, Xbox One
A Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition PC patch won’t be happening, even though it’s hitting the next gen consoles with a radical change in graphics. Recent comparisons show the level of detail between the PS3 and PlayStation 4 versions of Tomb Raider, and the difference is incredible.
Tomb Raider may be the first game to really show a “definitive” difference between current gen and next gen. Even though the PC gamers could probably see the best upgrade to detail yet with the even higher resolution possible on desktops, Lara Croft is only getting her basic adventure there.
Why are PC gamers not getting an update patch?
Crystal Dynamics built the Tomb Raider upgrade from the ground up for the PS4 and Xbox One, so the code is apparently integral to the console experience. Making the Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition PC patch available would be almost like rebuilding the game itself. The controls are extremely different, and the consoles have only so much processing power available. A computer can be upgraded for better performance, so the graphics would have to be more adaptable to allow for higher resolution.
Executive Producer Scot Amos stated, “a lot of development work [was] put in to custom craft it for the new platforms.”
On Crystal Dynamics’ website it was stated:
“Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition is the ultimate expression of our original vision for Tomb Raider. The one now capable with the next-gen horsepower and extra time and manpower we had to craft this experience. We were very happy with the final Tomb Raider experience when the last piece of DLC dropped. It’s a complete and fulfilling journey, and we didn’t want to break that balance but instead enhance it wherever possible for the highest fidelity experience possible.”
PC Tomb Raider gamers won’t be getting any of the DLC either, which might sting if you were expecting more outside the consoles.
Do you think the Tomb Raider: Definitive Editon PC patch is really that big of a problem, or is Crystal Dynamics just not trying? The next gen update is scheduled to arrive at the end of this month.
