Nadya Suleman: ‘Octomom’ May Lose Custody Of Kids Over Welfare Fraud Charge
Nadya Suleman gained fame as Octomom, the mother of octuplets along with six other kids, but she may be losing custody over the kids after being hit with a welfare fraud charge.
Suleman was charged Monday with failing to report close to $30,000 in earnings, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office said. According to the complaint, the 38-year-old mother applied for public assistance while concealing earnings she made while stripping and for a porn video she appeared in.
“While applying for public aid, the mother of 14 children allegedly failed to disclose that she was also getting checks for personal appearances and residuals from videos. She allegedly failed to report the extra income she earned between Jan. 1, 2013, and June 30, 2013,” the DA’s office said.
Nadya Suleman now faces the prospect of five years in prison, which would also mean losing custody of her 14 children.
For months, reports have indicated that Suleman was unable to care for her children. In December, news outlets reported that she was close to being evicted from the rundown property where she lives with her 10 sons and four daughters.
Suleman had reportedly left the property in shambles, with the eight children crammed into bunk beds in a room with a broken window. She had been living in a home owned by Tim Chapman, who operates a rehab center where Nadya was treated.
After letting Octomom live in the home rent-free, Chapman decided to sell it to Lana El-Jor, who reportedly wanted Nadya and her children out.
Nadya Suleman will be arraigned Friday in Los Angeles, with prosecutors expected to ask for bail to be set at $25,000.
